Five Start this Weekend, Four are Ranked, Women's Cross Country #1
The New York University varsity sports season commences this weekend with five teams heading into action.
Four of the five have receivedtop-20 national preseason rankings from their various sport organizations, with three being among the top-10 andwomen's cross country earning the #1spot!
Women's volleyball will be the first NYU team to begin competition this season.The Violets startthe year ranked #6 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Preseason Poll and open at home at the John A. Paulson Center on Friday, August 30, at 4:30pm against the University of Massachusetts Boston. Last season, NYU posted a 33-5 record, advanced to the NCAA Division III Final Four for the second year in a row and won the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship.
Grace Nelson, a sophom*ore outside hitter, heads into the season as the reigning AVCADivision III Freshman of the Year. She led the Violets in service aces (63) and finished second in kills (380).
Ava Launsbach, a junior setter, is another notable returner for the team. She led the Violets in assists (744) and was second in digs (278).
Next up on Friday, both NYU cross country teams will compete at the Vassar Opener beginning at 6:00pm. The 2023-24 campaign was historic in multiple ways, as the women's team won its first UAA Championship and finished as the National Runner-Up at the NCAA Division III Championship, its highest finish in program history. The men's team had an outstanding year as well, placing second at the NCAA Niagara Regional, qualifying for the NCAA Championship and finishing 16th nationally.
A pair of All-Americans are returning to the women's team, which begins the campaignranked #1 in the United States Track and Fieldand Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Preseason Poll. Sophom*ore Morgan Uhlhorn and junior Viv Kane finished 15th and 37th, respectively, at the 2023 NCAA Championship, clocking times of 21:22.9 and 21:45.8, to earn All-America accolades.
Senior Ryan Tobin is back with the men's team, which enters the season ranked #18 in the USTFCCCA Poll. In 2023, Tobinrecorded an 11th-place finish at the UAA Championship and garnered Second Team All-UAA honors. He also made his third straight appearance at Nationals and finished45th with a time of 25:13.2.
NYU's women's soccer team, ranked #10 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) Pre-Season Poll, will make its season debut at 4:30pm (PST) in Claremont, CA, on Friday to take on Pomona Pitzer. In 2023, the Violets finished with an overall 14-3-2 record (3-2-2 in the UAA), advanced to the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA Division III Tournament, and was ranked #10 in the final USC poll.
Graduate Student Kelli Keady returns for her fifth year as a Violet. Last season, she tied the program record for goals (14), led the team in shots (55) and shots on goal (37), and was named USC Second Team All-American, USC All-Region IV First Team, and First Team All-UAA..
The men's soccer team also kicks into gear this weekend, hosting Purchase College at 5:00pm in Newark, NJ, on Sunday, September 1. The Violets, who will be using New Jersey Institute of Technology's (NJIT) Lubetkin Field for all its home matches this season, notched an overall 5-6-5 record last season and went 3-2-2 in the UAA.
Notable returners to the men's team include Joss Cohen, a senior defender who grabbed All-UAA Honorable Mention a season ago, and Chaz Bond, a senior goalkeeper who received UAA Athlete of the Week - Defense honors during the campaign.
